Open Source Analytics Offer Cost-Effective Choice for Marketing Automation Leader

Background

Marketo uses Revolution R Enterprise for Building Prototypes Rapidly & Cost-Effectively

More than one trillion dollars is spent annually to generate sales leads, but most of the leads generated are never followed up upon. Marketo, the global leader in Revenue Performance Management solutions, offers a fix to this problem. Its marketing automation and sales solutions help marketing and sales teams work together more effectively to generate greater revenue for businesses.
Marketo analyzes data and uses the results to create unique products and services for its customer base. Marketo enables its customers to vastly improve the efficiency and performance of their sales and marketing operations by leveraging the potential of data science to overcome what has been called “the last frontier of productivity”.

Challenge

The modern global economy has created an explosion of data. As data sets become larger and more complex, analysts look for software solutions that are both fast and cost-effective. Open source techniques based on R, a programming language designed specifically for data analysis, offer users the speed, agility and economy required to handle today’s larger ‘Big Data’ sets.

Solution

Yan Zou, Marketo’s principal research analyst, uses programs and packages written in R. “I learned R in a stat class in graduate school. I find it very easy to program and use,” says Yan.

On a typical day, she analyzes data to spot trends and patterns. She typically works on a variety of problems, and uses R for a wide range of programming operations—from regression analysis to forecasting.

She uses Revolution R Enterprise, enhanced R-based software from Revolution Analytics , to model data and build prototypes, quickly and efficiently.

“I use it for data exploration and data mining,” says Yan. “I use it for building prototypes because it’s fast and easy-to-make adjustments. I can build the prototype and just let it run, because it’s very fast!”

The speed and utility of Revolution R Enterprise, along with its user-friendly features such as built-in debugging, make it an ideal workhorse for industrial-strength data crunching.

“I love the IDE because it lets me see my code much more easily, and it is similar enough to Microsoft Visual Studio that it feels familiar and easy-to-use,” says Yan.

She is also impressed by the ROI of Revolution R Enterprise. “It’s very effective and it really lets us build prototypes fast. That’s important to us.”

Results

The results of employing open source R and Revolution R Enterprise have been positive. Yan can build models and prototypes quickly and cost-effectively. “It’s really very good across a wide range of functions, and that makes it very useful to us,” she says. “Revolution R Enterprise is very cost-effective, which is one of the reasons we picked the product.”

For the moment, she uses Revolution R Enterprise primarily for data exploration, but she is looking forward to using it for more advanced tasks in the future.
